Your employees’ ability to produce good work often relies on how well they work together as a team. And many teams work best when everyone is familiar with each other, making team building activities an important piece of the corporate puzzle. What can you do to help your team bond? Try these four ideas.
- Game day: Plan a day (or half day) of games, sports, trust activities and relay races, depending on the tastes of your staff. Some people prefer physical activity while others prefer board or card games. Take a quick survey to get an idea of what your team likes and go from there. The ability to play games or sports together lets the team get to know each other’s personalities, along with gaining a better sense of their strengths and weaknesses while under stress.
- Field trip: Take the team out for an afternoon trip, whether to a museum, a fair, the theatre or anywhere else where your staff can simply have fun and be themselves. Individuals who have already developed a connection can develop that friendship further, while others who may not see each other in the office may find that they get along quite well.
- Sponsored dinner: With lunch, there’s always a rush to get back to the office. Instead, sponsor a dinner party, perhaps around a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas. This can be hosted at a restaurant or it can be a potluck at a volunteer’s house. Enjoying a relaxed meal together is a great way to get to know coworkers on a more personal level.
- Volunteering: Doing volunteer work as a team doubles as a way to get to know each other and a way to help the community. Serving the underprivileged at a soup kitchen, cleaning up a park, assisting with a pet adoption drive or visiting with the elderly all act as team building activities. Giving of yourself often brings out the best in people, which may assist coworkers who aren’t terribly fond of each other develop a mutual respect for each other.
